Ok, so Andy Roddick and Richard Gasquet aren’t quite the heirs apparent to Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi (yet), but I’m sure Lacoste is feeling good about having both on their roster. Roddick is the top-ranked American and Gasquet is the top-ranked Frenchman. Both are young and will likely play each other many more times in the future.
Lacoste shouldn’t get too crazy with their marketing campaigns, though. Remember the ad Nike created around Sampras and Agassi to run during the 2000 U.S. Open?
Click on Andre’s pic to view it.
That year, Agassi was the top seed and defending champion, and Sampras was seeded fourth. Everyone was drooling over a potential meeting in the final. Agassi’s loss to Arnaud Clement in the 2nd round killed that buzz. aaaaaaaaawkward. The ad ran for the whole tournament, even when Agassi was likely already back in Vegas nursing his wounds.
To make matters worse, Sampras lost in the finals to Marat Safin.
^^Babolat.
